If this mark turns ninety degrees to the left it becomes a short vowel e. Ninety more degrees to the left and you get a short vowel i. Ninety more degrees and you get a short vowel o.
If you reverse the figure so the parallel line within goes in the other direction, then from this starting position it is a short vowel h which is pronounced as in ‘aura’. If you flip this figure one hundred and eighty degrees to the left you get a short vowel u.
